SAPRO serves as the Department’s central authority for sexual assault policy and provides oversight to ensure that each of the Service’s programs comply with Department policy.

The Under Secretary of War for Personnel and Readiness (USW(P&R)) oversees SAPRO. The Defense Human Resources Activity (DHRA) provides operational management, logistical support, and day-to-day guidance for program management and execution. 
SAPRO is led by a Director appointed from the Senior Executive Service (SES).

WHAT WE DO

SAPRO executes policy, planning, and oversight across the military community. 
  • Policy to advance prevention efforts, provide victim assistance, and guide SAPR personnel 
  • Planning to combat sexual assault in five critical areas, including prevention, victim assistance, investigation, accountability, and assessment 
  • Oversight to promote excellence in SAPR Program execution and outcomes everywhere

SAPRO collaborates with the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and National Guard to prevent sexual assault and assist victims around the world. SAPRO also works in close collaboration with the Office of Command Climate and Well-Being Integration (OCCWI) on primary prevention efforts.
